How To Ensure Bonding Does Not Stain Right After Installation

Bonding is a method of repairing teeth that have sustained relatively minor damage. Chipped, or lightly cracked teeth, and teeth that endure relatively little pressure when closing the mouth (front teeth, canines) are best suited for the procedure.

As bonding is usually performed on teeth that show when one smiles, it is important to know how to keep bonded teeth white after installation.

The Bonding Process

During bonding, a composite resin is applied to the areas of damage on the teeth. In order for the resin to properly adhere to the surface of the tooth, it must be lightly abraded. Depending on the extent of damage to the tooth, you may be given a local anesthetic for this part of the process. The resin is mixed to match the color of your teeth, applied, and molded to their shape. From there, the process is similar to that of a filling; a special light is used to “cure”, or harden, the resin, and your bite will be checked to ensure you are comfortable.

How To Keep Bonded Teeth White

The procedure for keeping bonded teeth white is much the same as keeping natural teeth white. Brush twice per day, and floss once a day; these practices will help minimize discoloration by stopping the build-up of plaque. You should also use a mouthwash to rinse, but note that mouthwashes that contain alcohol can slowly dissolve composite resin. Ask our dentists which non-alcohol mouthwash is best for bonded teeth.

Cut down on sugar, and avoid food and drink that stain teeth. Anything that would stain porcelain, would also stain your teeth and bonding. Foods that contain turmeric or saffron, red wine, coffee, tea, berries and berry juices, and dark colored sodas should only be consumed with caution. It is also important to limit or cease use of tobacco products.
