smiling woman with perfect teeth from Select Care Dental in Redmond, OregonRestoring issues with your teeth, including chips, cracks, and cavities, is important for restoring your oral health and preventing more serious issues from developing. When these issues affect your front teeth, the quality of your smile is also affected. At Select Care Dental, we can restore damaged teeth, and improve the quality of your smile, using composite resins.

What is Composite Resin?

Composite resin is a tooth-colored material that not only restores your oral health but your smile as well.

A History of Composite Resin

The earliest composites were set with a chemical reaction between two different pastes. This procedure, however, had a few procedural disadvantages. In the 1970’s, light curing with a UV light was introduced. By the end of the 1970’s and into the early 1980’s, micro filled systems were introduced. These composites boasted greater color stability and greater resistance to wear. Also, in the early 1980’s, the acid etch technique that bonded composite resin to the teeth came about. Bonding the composite resin to the teeth strengthens its structure and also helps to strengthen the structure of the tooth as well.

Uses for Composite Resins

Composite resin has numerous uses in dentistry. Uses include:
•  Filling cavities. Composite resin provides an effective alternative to amalgam for filling cavities. Not only is the material tooth-colored, but it also does not contain any metal nor does it contain any mercury.
•  Dental bonding. Bonding is a cosmetic treatment used to improve the appearance of teeth affected by minor flaws. Because bonding is so versatile, it can treat minor chips and cracks, gaps between your teeth, teeth that are oddly sized or shaped, and discoloration.
•  Veneers. Composite resin can be used to make veneers, which are thin shells that are made to be bonded to the front surfaces of teeth affected by minor flaws. Veneers are an alternative to bonding. To place these restorations, a thin layer of tooth enamel needs to be removed first. This helps to provide a completely natural appearance and ensures that your veneers do not look or feel bulky.
•  Crowns. Some crowns are made using composite resin. A crown is a dental restoration used to treat a tooth affected by more significant damage or decay. A crown is designed to protect a tooth following damage, preventing further damage and infections. With composite resin, you are also provided with an aesthetic restoration to your smile as well.

Benefits of Composite Resin

Composite resin provides many benefits.
•  Composite resin does not contain any metal or mercury. This makes the material an ideal alternative to individuals with metal allergies or those who are concerned about mercury in amalgam fillings.
•  Composites bond to the natural tooth structure, which helps to strengthen the tooth and insulate it from temperature changes.
